1771 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Christopher Anstey

Anonymous,"On the complimentary Verses that lately passed between Mr. Garrick and Mr. Anstey" General Evening Post (23 May 1771).

When mincing masters, met with misses,
Pay mutual compliments for kisses,
Miss Polly sings, no doubt, divinely!
And Master Jacky spouts as finely!
But odious such a fulsome greeting,
When two old stagers have a meeting:
Foh! how I hate the filthy pother!
What! Men beslobber one another!
