1764 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Rev. Charles Churchill

Anonymous, "On C—l's Times" St. James's Chronicle (22 September 1764).

Sodom, by Angels was destroy'd,
With Brimstone, Hail, and Fire;
To blast the Modern, is employ'd
C—h—l's Satyric Lyre.

On guilty Breasts thy Vengeance vent,
There let thy Arrows fly;
But do not damn the Innocent;
Poets ought not to lye.

Lash on this vile detested Sin,
And we will sing thy Fame;
Or with Debauch and Lust begin,
And therein put thy Name.
