1764 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Rev. Charles Churchill

F., "A Recipe, occasion'd by Mr. Churchill's being taken ill at Bologne, and attended by four Physicians" St. James's Chronicle (8 November 1764).

Great Churchill sick! O cruel Fate!
When Britons want his Pen,
To keep in Awe the Tools of State,
And make 'em better Men.

Ye Sons of Galen, leave this Strife,
Your Brains no longer rack,
But clap (would you preserve his Life)
A Leach upon his back.
