1811 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Edward Jerningham

A Lady, "To Edward Jerningham, Esq. on his Poem, The Old Bard's Farewell" The Sun (26 January 1811).

The genial Sun that bids the teeming plain
Fulfill the hopes of many a grateful swain,
Ere yet his influence to stern Winter yield,
And joyless Silence reign thro' every field,
With brightest radiance decks the close of day,
While fond Regret pursues his parting ray;
Thus, as thy Muse pour'd forth her parting strain,
With much-lov'd pleasures, she awakened Pain.
