1763 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Rev. Charles Churchill

Anonymous, "To Mr. Hogarth. On the threatened Epistle" London Chronicle (7 July 1763) 23.

From the praise-worthy, praise is praise indeed.—
With men of sense, sure, the reverse will hold;
Nor the most artful scandal e'er succeed,
Indited by the scandalous and bold.

Tho' with his jingles he may please the town;
Fear not from such a satyrist the rod,
Who hath the robe of righteousness laid down,
Would make no scruple to revile his God.
