1854 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

William Jerdan

Robert Shelton Mackenzie, Note in Noctes Ambrosianae, ed. Mackenzie (1854) 3:67n.

William Jerdan was Editor of the Literary Gazette for five and thirty years. In his hands it was an organ of much weight, but latterly was deficient in spirit. Jordan's recently published Autobiography, in four volumes, is a remarkably provoking book. He mixed, on familiar terms, with all the men of mark an mind in Great Britain, for half a century, and while he relates very little about them, is perpetually declaring that had his papers been in order and his time not so much pressed, he could have told a great deal!
