1800 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Rev. Phineas Fletcher

Henry Francis Cary, Literary Journal for 1800; Memoir of the Rev. Henry Francis Cary (1847) 1:160.

April 6. Concluded Fletcher's Purple Island. This poem very successfully imitates the measure of Spenser; but the subject, as being a naked and professed allegory throughout, and in the former part no very pleasant one, is unfortunate. Fletcher, however, had certainly much of the "mens divinior."
