1827 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Mary Leapor

Alexander Dyce, in Specimens of British Poetesses, selected and chronologically arranged (1827) 170.

MARY LEAPOR, born 1722, died 1746, whose writings shew that she was endowed with no ordinary talents, was the daughter of the gardener of Judge Blencowe, of Marston St. Lawrence, in Northamptonshire. Her education, of course, was very slight; and it is said that she was some time cookmaid in a gentleman's family. Two volumes of her poems have appeared.
