1755 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Susanna Duncombe

Bonnell Thornton, "To a Young Lady, on drawing her for a Valentine" 1755; Nichols, Select Collection of Poems (1780-82) 7:317.

Last night the happy lot was mine,
To draw you for my Valentine;
Dame Fortune, to my wishes kind,
Henceforth I'll swear's no longer blind,
For well the sportive Goddess knew,
How long my heart has beat to you:
What Chance ordains, let Reason then approve,
And both conspire to bless with mutual love!
