1820 ca. ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Philip Massinger

Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Marginalia to Daniel's Civil Wars, 1820 ca.; in Coleridge on the Seventeenth Century (1955) 515.

The Poets of Elizabeth and still more of James's time had a half in half hankering for Popery — we see it in Spenser, in Drayton, in Massinger. In dignity of moral character they were wofully inferior to the succeeding age — a fact honorable to Liberty and therefore to human nature.
