1815 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Philip Massinger

Philip Bliss, in Athenae Oxonienses (1815) 2:656-57.

Massinger's works have been collected and published, with little attention to accuracy, and with no critical excellencies to counterballance the want of it, by Coxeter, 8vo. Lond. 1759, which had a new title page, and an essay on the English dramatic writers, added in 1761. This was again printed, with additional notes and corrections, by Monck Mason, in 1779. But the best edition of Massinger is that in 1805, with notes critical and explanatory by W. Gifford and Dr. Ireland, which is, on many accounts, an excellent and valuable work.
