1879 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Richard Niccols

Thomas Corser, in Collectanea Anglo-Poetica 9 (1879) 72.

Spenser's Faerie Queen had appeared in 1590, and there can be little doubt that Niccols had drunk his earliest inspiration of the Pierian Muse at that immortal fount. His whole style and many of his words and epithets are evidently redolent of Spenser; and in his description of "The Bower of Bliss" [in the Cuckow], he has been almost a servile imitator of that author.
