1818 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Samuel Rogers

E. W. G., "Apologue" Baldwin's London Weekly Journal (17 January 1818).

Rogers, engrav'd on stone
By Egypt's famed Denon,
Reminds us of the Martyr Stephen,
Tho' still the likeness is not even;
For ston'd to death the pious Saint we moan,
But Rogers to the life we have on stone.
