1791 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Robert Merry

Anonymous, "Extempore Pun, on the Farce of The Merry Mourners being succeeded by a new Tragedy by Mr. Merry" Morning Chronicle (6 April 1791).

As 'tis in life, so on our mimic scene
Alternate joy and sorrow intervene;
The Merry Mourners now no more appear,
The reason is, we mourn with MERRY here;
Yet might such change, perhaps, suggest a query,
If mirth be mourning, or the mourning MERRY.
