1791 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

William Cowper

Anonymous, "Homer" Morning Chronicle (27 August 1791).

MACPHERSON Homer's heav'nly strains pourtrays,
In prose as wild as dythyrambic lays;
While C—'s lines the Grecian Bard disclose,
In lays as tame as dull lethargic prose;
Decide, ye Critics, which Translates him worse,
Bombastic Prose, or low lethargic Verse.

POPE AND C—R.
POPE deck'd the venerable Bard of Greece
In taudry trappings, like a Green-box Piece;
C—R, to strip him of these trappings brags,
And clothes the venerable Bard in rags.
