1794 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Richard Westall

M., "Lines on the Drawings at the Shakespeare Gallery, intended for Milton's Paradise Lost" Morning Chronicle (9 June 1794).

Wrapt in Seraphic visionary sight
To darkness drear our eyeless Bard gave light:
Sin, Death, and Hell his pow'rful pen pourtray'd,
And Satan wonder'd at the mischief made!
For the mind's eye immortal Milton drew,
'Till Westal brought the ideal forms to view.
