1773 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Oliver Goldsmith

P. H. M. D. "On Seeing the second Performance of She stoops to Conquer" Morning Chronicle and London Advertiser (18 March 1773).

Dull sentimental comedy's a puke
Nature disclaims; Art, Genius, Taste, rebuke.
If there's pure joy, 'tis surely to commend
Th' exalted merit of a worthy friend;
From genuine humour's source who brings to view
True comic scenes, with rapture we pursue;
'Tis thine, O GOLDSMITH! boldly to restore
The laugh convulsive, and applauding roar.
