Royal Charles the merry, the witty, and idle,
Swore — "Cardan's a sceptic alone in the bible;
And Malmsbury Hobbes (of Freethinkers the boast)
Was an Atheist indeed, but believ'd in a ghost:
Thus orthodox Johnson in some points is right,
He believes not in Ossian — but trusts second sight.
