1778 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Richard Cumberland

T. S., "Extempore. On Mr. Cumberland's Tragedy of the Battle of Hastings" Morning Chronicle and London Advertiser (29 January 1778).

Again the tragic Muse appears to view,
With wonted Majesty approaches you,
And proves at once th' insinuation vain,
"An interregnum in the tragic reign."
The Muse to-night a darling child has brought,
Conceiv'd by Genius, and by Science taught;
Mark well the features of a rightful heir,
Ye common parents of the Stage — your care.
'Tis you must call its latent merit forth,
And give to modesty the stamp of worth.
