1778 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Bp. Beilby Porteus

Clio, "Extempore, on hearing two celebrated Orators, the Lord Bishop of Chester, and the Reverend Dr. Mylne" Morning Chronicle and London Advertiser (22 February 1778).

From Nature's fountain each deriv'd the art,
Porteous to please, and Mylne to touch the heart.
Did genius operate its perfect work,
Mylne would be Chester, Chester would be York:
Nay, further our presumption we may carry,
Mylne would be York, and Porteous Canterbury.
