1782 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Edmund Burke

Anonymous, "Epigram" Morning Chronicle and London Advertiser (7 December 1782).

How could you, friend B—e, when our hearts are all aking,
Chuse a time so improper your jokes to be cracking;
When the ship is just sinking, must you have your jest,
And try the King's speech by ridicule's test?
Most deservedly therefore you meet with disgrace,
For your wit's, like yourself, both now out of place.
