1817 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Robert Southey

Anonymous, "Epigram" Public Ledger (2 May 1817).

"The People must be fed with the milk of sound doctrine."
MR. SOUTHEY'S LETTER TO W. SMITH, ESQ. M.P.

"To check each democratic scheme
Give doctrine's pure and milky stream,"
Quoth Southey, "or 'twill never do."
And then, to prove his logic clear,
He, for two hundred pound a year,
Affords us milk — and water too.
