1765 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

George Colman

Moderation, "On some late Criticisms" St. James's Chronicle (15 June 1765).

Bards! who mean Brother-Bards to depress or to raise,
Excess is the Thing both in Censure and Praise.
Ye Daubers! with Trowel lay Praises on thick;
Ye Pelters! throw Dirt enough; some on't will stick.
Would ye cry the Legation or Estimate down?
Call Gloucester an Atheist, a Dunce Dr. Brown.
Would ye puff tiny Playwrights? ne'er mince it; but swear,
George Colman is Terence, and Sam Foote Moliere.
