1766 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Samuel Johnson

AE, "For the St. James's Chronicle" St. James's Chronicle (7 January 1766).

The Lion sick, as Fables show,
Came to so dire a pass,
In Reputation fell so low,
To shrink from each vile Ass.

In Commentator base,
To Genius forfeits all his Claim,
And flies from K—'s Face.
