1767 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Bonnell Thornton

Anonymous, "On Reading Mr. Thornton's Translation of Plautus, and comparing it with the Original" St. James's Chronicle (19 February 1767).

Thornton! what Praise? who hast so justly hit,
Not only Plautus' Sentiment, but Wit:
No lifeless Portrait of thy Author drawn,
But him himself in a bright Mirrour shewn,
Held up to public View; he lives! and we
An Image perfect as the Substance see;
Another Sofia in thy Work descry;
Which is the Mortal? which the Deity?
