1773 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Elizabeth Sheridan

Anonymous, "On the Bishop of B— inviting Miss Linley to Dinner" St. James's Chronicle (30 March 1773).

Enraptur'd Bards have often spoke
The wonder-working Power of Song,
How Brutes it tam'd, and bent the Oak,
And drew th' attentive Stones along.
But all in Linley's Note must own
A greater, happier, Power exprest,
It more than softens rugged Stone,
It makes a Miser give a Feast.
