1773 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Oliver Goldsmith

Anonymous, "The Combat" St. James's Chronicle (30 March 1773).

While the Printer was busy, to give him a Blow,
Unsuspecting, unguarded — how cou'd you do so?
Such a Victory gain'd — will by all be agreed,
My dear Doctor, is "stooping to conquer," indeed.

IN PRAISE OF BEING DRUBBED.
Since he's been drub'd, the Point is still to settle,
Whether our Goldsmith is of Sterling Metal,
Many the Properties Essayists hold,
Besides the Touchstone, to prove Sterling Gold;
Our Doctor, Sirs, can boast the one most valuable,
He is, and Evans proves it, truly "malleable."
