1777 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Rev. William Mason

Anonymous, "To the Author of the Heroick Epistle" St. James's Chronicle (12 July 1777).

As from a Butt new broach'd fam'd Calvert's Beer
Issues like Brandy strong, like Amber clear;
Till often pier'c and plugg'd with wooden Pegs,
The crazy Vessel spews forth vapid Dregs:
So flows thy Muse, who with heroick Blaze
Erst dimm'd the Polar Star's diminish'd Rays,
Now sunk an Alehouse Drab, with spiteful Leer,
She pours her muddy Lees on cropt Shebbeare;
Nor will the Slattern's foul Pollution spare
The laurell'd Heads of Anstey and of Clare.
