1781 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Rev. John Donne

Belinda, "Answer to the Lines in the St. J. Chronicle of Thursday last, from Dr. Donne" St. James's Chronicle (20 October 1781).

Who is this famous Dr. Donne?
A College Fellow ten to one;
A Monster he, and no Man:
You need not travel far or near,
But may discover, every where,
A virtuous lovely Woman.

If by delusive Flattery caught,
We are by Chance sometimes in Fault,
I'd have the Doctor know,
That in the Book I read, it's said,
When wicked is the hapless Maid,
It's Man that makes her so.
