1784 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Edmund Burke

Anonymous, "B—ke's Glasgow Promotion" St. James's Chronicle (24 April 1784).

Unqualified in Senates to declaim,
B—ke gains a Post well suited to his Knowledge;
Scotch Pedants, zealous to enlarge his Fame,
Have chose him lordly Rector of a College.

May B—ke o'er beardless and o'er bearded Boys,
His Pow'r sublime, unevined, long maintain!
And though St. Stephen will not hear the Noise,
In learned Cells unrivall'd may it reign!
