1784 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Samuel Johnson

N., "For the St. James's Chronicle" St. James's Chronicle (23 December 1784).

While the latest Periods boast thy letter'd Fame,
Europe shall weep the Loss of Johnson's Name!
Sons of the distant World shall blot the Reign
That could desert thee in the Hour of Pain:
Refuse the Boon that might thy Sorrows heal,
Then plead the Poverty of Britain's Weal.
I saw the Tear of Pity, heard her moan,
When the mean Answer fell from Britain's Throne.
