1786 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Samuel Johnson

Anonymous, "On Dr. Johnson" St. James's Chronicle (25 July 1786).

Lo! Johnson, trembling on the Verge of Death
With Fear and Grief resigns his fleeting Breath;
Yet was he nutur'd in Religion's School;
Yet his whole Life was squar'd by Virtue's Rule.
Hence, though in Misery he seem to die,
Hope, lively Hope, beams from his closing Eye.
