1794 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Dr. John Wolcot

A. N., "Epigram" St. James's Chronicle (10 April 1794).

The Pegasus fam'd by the ancient and wise,
Which the old Grecian Pindar once rode,
Bore his rider on high to a seat in the skies,
And fix'd midst the Gods his abode.

But the wretch that has borrow'd that Bard's honour'd name,
With the modest addition of Peter,
Will ride to the Dev'l, tho' his steed is as lame
As the feet of his wild rambling metre.
