1709 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

John Oldham

William Coward, in Licentia Poetica Discuss'd (1709) 73.

OLDHAM, whose Wit Satyrically shines,
By frequent Harshness blunts his Poynant Lines,
And his Rough Style discovers a Defect,
Butchering that Vice he neatly should dissect.
Like Rusty Swords, whose Points, tho' sharply ground,
Both at one Time make and defile the Wound.
