1705 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Bp. Francis Atterbury

John Dunton, Life and Errors (1705; 1818) 1:366.

He is a zealous defender of the Church of England, as thinking it the purest Church upon Earth. He has a mighty sense of the worth of souls, and of the vast importance of those truths which he delivers to them. He encourages Piety wherever he comes; and, though a Court Preacher, has too unblemished a candour to be capable of those arts and practices that a false and deceitful World does account wisdom. To conclude: He is a good Liver, and an eloquent Preacher; and converses with persons of all conditions without lessening his character.
