1807 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

William Congreve

Robert Southey, in Specimens of the Later English Poets (1807) 1:271.

Congreve's dramatick fame has obtained a place for his Poems in the general collection. The Ode selected here [On Mrs. Arabella Hunt] is said by Johnson to be the best of his irregular Pieces. Johnson, however, did not mean to imply that it was good, it is at least original, and perhaps incomparable for absurdity.
