1780 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Edmund Smith

John Nichols, in Select Collection of Poems (1780-84) 4:62-63.

Mr. Oldisworth, in the account of this ingenious poet which Dr. Johnson has adopted, observes that "there are many of Smith's first essays in epigram, elegy, and epique, still handed about the University in manuscript, which shew a masterly hand;" and that "the Encoenia and public collections of the University upon state subjects were never in such esteem as when he contributed most largely to them."
