1807 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

George Jeffreys

Robert Southey, in Specimens of the Later English Poets (1807) 2:213.

Except the Translations of Vida's Chess and Vaniere's Country Farm, with two or three Dramatick and Musical Pieces, the flights of this Author's Muse were short and desultory. A Quarto Volume of his poems was published in 1767, with a Dedication to the Marquis of Carnarvon dated in 1734. Though it be contrary to the general plan of this work to give translations as specimens of the poetick talents of the age, yet that which is subjoined may perhaps from its excellence justify the departure from this rule.
