The original hero of the Dunciad. This is little to his discredit, when it is recollected for what he obtained that honour. But Theobald stands convicted of shameful and dishonest plagiarism. The second specimen [The Cave of Poverty] is taken from a Poem highly commended for its similitude to Shakespeare, in the ninth volume of the Spectator, a scarce and curious book, which was printed separately from the others.
