The late Lord Kames has left eminent proofs of his learning, and the most active industry. His Elements of Criticism evidence an extensive knowledge of literature, though not much sensibility or justness of taste. He is, however, modest on the subject; and as he assumes but little, there is the more excuse for his mistakes. But we cannot help thinking he is too scientific and metaphysical on a subject that depends on sentiment and feelings, much more than on reason or intellect.
