Here lie the Remains of
Joseph Spence, M.A.
Regius Professor of Modern History in the
University of Oxford,
Prebendary of Durham,
And Rector of Great Horwood, Bucks.
In Whom Learning, Genius, and Shining Talents
Tempered with Judgment,
And Softened by the most Exquisite Sweetness of Manners,
Were greatly Excelled by his Humanity;
Ever ready to Assist the Distressed
By Constant and Extensive Charity to the Poor,
And by Unbounded Benevolence to All:
He Died Aug. 20, 1768,
In the 70th Year of His Age.
