1782 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Rev. Matthew Pilkington

Anonymous, in Biographia Dramatica (1782; 1812) 1:572.

Our authoress [Laetitia Pilkington] was married, very young, to the Rev. Mr. Matthew Pilkington, who was also a poet of no inconsiderable merit. This pair of wits, as is but too often the case, lived very unhappily together; and at length were totally separated, in consequence of an accidental discovery which Mr. Pilkington made of a gentleman in his wife's bedchamber. Of this affair, however, Mrs. Pilkington, in her celebrated Memoirs of her own life, gives such an account, as would persuade her readers to believe that, in reality, nothing criminal passed between her and the gentleman; but, "Credat Judaeus Apella."
