1781 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Sir John Harington

Thomas Warton, in History of English Poetry (1774-81; 1840) 3:391-92.

In the year 1590, Sir John Harrington, who will occur again in his place as an original writer, exhibited an English version of Ariosto's ORLANDO FURIOSO; which, although executed without spirit or accuracy, unanimated and incorrect, it enriched our poetry by a communication of new stories of fiction and imagination, both of the romantic and comic species of Gothic machinery and familiar manners.
