1781 ca. ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Samuel Johnson

Robert Potter, "Epigram" 1781 ca.; Poetical Register for 1808-09 (1812) 369.

Yon Ass in vain the flow'ry lawns invite;
To mumble this his supreme delight.
Such is the Critic, who with wayward pride
To Blackmore gives the praise to Pope denied;
Wakes Yalden's embers, joys in Pomfret's lay,
But sickens at the heaven-strung lyre of Gray.
