1824 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Bp. Robert Lowth

Thomas Frognall Dibdin, in Library Companion (1824; 1825) 1:68n.

One of the greatest and one of the wisest of those who ever filled the See of London. His Preledctions on the Sacred poetry of the Hebrews, together with his version of Isaiah, and the preliminary Dissertation, are the principle monuments which his pen has raised; but though few, these monuments are at once solid, beautiful, and perfect. The Church of England, may with just pride, number Lowth among the most profound of her scholars, and the most exemplary of her Bishops.
