1795 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Rev. John Free

William Seward, "Rev. Dr. Free" European Magazine 28 (December 1795) 377.

Dr. Free's definition of a Man was, an Animal that can demonstrate the three angles of a triangle to be equal to two right ones; wisely making the proper application of the powers of reason which he possesses, to be the characteristic of his species; which is surely much better than to describe him from any corporal appearance, or configuration of parts, which he may chance to have in common with the cock, the pig, or the monkey. The Doctor's definition too completely quadrates with that of Aristotle, not a reasoning Being, but a Being capable of reasoning.
