1765 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Cuthbert Shaw, in The Race (1765; 1766) 10.

First enter'd in the list the laureat bard,
And thus preferr'd his suit — "If due reward,
Goddess ador'd, to merit thou assign,

And that he rhymes the best who rhymes for Kings."
