1769 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Rev. James Merrick

James Granger, in Biographical History of England (1769; 1824) 5:51n.

The late ingenious and learned Mr. James Merrick, a well known clergyman of Reading, who was indefatigable in his endeavours to promote literature, charity, and piety, has distributed near 10,000 copies of this excellent tract [Christian Monitor] chiefly among the soldiers, many of whom he has brought to a sense of religion. — Though I cherish the memory, I shall not here attempt the character of this worthy person; so worthy, so excellent, that it is, indeed, far beyond my power to do justice to it.
