1769 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Rev. Alexander Gerard

William Shenstone to Richard Graves, 26 October 1759; Works (1769) 3:342.

I have purchased Gerard upon Taste, the author of which is a Professor at Edinburgh, and the book commended in the [Monthly] Review — you will say that the Reviewers are partial to Scotch-people — I know nothing of that, but the book is learned, and on a pleasing subject — I may perhaps add a very important one — for surely it is altogether unquestionable that taste naturally leads to virtue.
