1775 ENGLISH POETRY 1579-1830: SPENSER AND THE TRADITION

Edmund Burke

Joseph Sterling, in The Rhapsodist (1775); Poems (1789) 125.

Tow'ring in Albion's sea-encircled reign
Ierne's fame for eloquence is known;
Behold her Burke, — sublime and beautiful,
Whom senates rev'rence, and whom nations love.
The time will come, when party shall approve
His honest heart, and his unshaken zeal;
Ev'n blushing Bristol shall confess his wrongs.
